Sewa, Bandi Chhor Divas and Gurpurab: Caring for Your Gurdwara Corner at Home
By the ANAGHA team, New Delhi · Updated

Quick answer
Sewa is selfless service, one of the core values of Sikhi, and cleaning the gurdwara is one of its most common forms. In 2026, Bandi Chhor Divas falls on Sunday 8 November (alongside Diwali) and Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab on Tuesday 24 November. At home, keep the prayer space clean and fresh, never spray anything on or near the Guru Granth Sahib, Gutka Sahib or rumalas, and wipe surrounding surfaces with a cloth.
What sewa means
Sewa means selfless service, done without expecting anything in return. Alongside naam japna (remembering God), kirat karni (honest work) and vand chakna (sharing), it is at the heart of Sikh life. In the gurdwara, sewa can mean cooking or serving langar, washing dishes, looking after shoes, or cleaning floors and railings, and anyone can take part.
Bandi Chhor Divas 2026
Bandi Chhor Divas, the 'day of liberation', marks Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji's release from Gwalior Fort, when he also secured the freedom of 52 imprisoned kings. It is celebrated on the same day as Diwali, with diyas, fireworks and the illumination of Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) in Amritsar. In 2026 it falls on Sunday 8 November in most calendars; check with your local gurdwara.
Gurpurab 2026
Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab, or Prakash Purab, falls on the full moon of Kartik: Tuesday 24 November 2026. Gurdwaras hold an Akhand Path in the days before, along with Nagar Kirtan processions, kirtan and langar. Many families also clean and decorate their homes and prayer rooms.
Keeping a gurdwara corner or prayer room at home
- If you keep the Guru Granth Sahib at home, follow your gurdwara's guidance on maryada: a clean, dedicated room, a raised manji sahib, a canopy and rumalas.
- Clean the room before parkash: dust, wipe surfaces and clean the floor.
- Never spray cleaner or fragrance on or near the Guru Granth Sahib, Gutka Sahib, rumalas or palki. Spray onto a cloth away from them and wipe only the surrounding surfaces.
- Wash rumalas and the chandoa by hand and separately, as your family does.
- Keep shoes out and heads covered in the room.
Gurpurab gift ideas
- A Nitnem book or Gutka Sahib with a cover, for someone who will keep it with respect
- A framed image of the Golden Temple
- A kara
- A phulkari dupatta
- A donation to langar in their name
- ANAGHA Sewa for their prayer room
